This summer, I have been doing ecology field work. My job involves riding in a car to and from our sites for about 3 hours a day. Now let's see: 3 hours, in a car, plus double pointed needles and yarn equals SOCKS!
-I finished the pomatomus socks, and if I had my camera with me right now, I would post pictures. I know that I made them, but I can honestly say that they look pretty darn good.
-I also made a baby hat and booties, with soft fuzzy pink yarn and white red heart yarn. They look super cute.
-I also started making stockinette socks for Jon. I made up a fair-isle chart for the VW logo and knit that into the cuff all the way around. They are knit in machine washable wool Daletta from Dale of Norway, and the heels and toes in Fortissima Socka, which has some nylon to prevent pilling and fraying. I am half way through the second sock already!
-Finally, I started knitting a sleeveless tank with lace detail in my many baby pink balls of Rowan 4-ply cotton. It's from Knitty but I can't find the link. I found the link: Isabella
Now it will just be hard to go back to my normal job where I DON'T get paid to knit. ha ha.

Irony
Today I saw a massive Hummer zooming down the highway with a sticker that read "Tread Lightly". I almost veered off the road it was so funny.

Suffering
"Freedom to Feel
Suffering is the necessary feeling of evil. If we don’t feel evil we stand antiseptically apart from it, numb. We can’t understand evil by thinking about it. The sin of much of our world is that we stand apart from pain; we buy our way out of the pain of being human. Jesus did not numb himself or withhold from pain. Suffering is the necessary pain so that we know evil, so that we can name evil and confront it. Otherwise we somehow dance through this world and never really feel what is happening. Brothers and sisters, the irony is not that God should feel so fiercely; it’s that his creatures feel so feebly. If there is nothing in your life to cry about, if there is nothing in your life to complain about, if there is nothing in your life to yell about, you must be out of touch. We must all feel and know the pain of humanity. The free space that God leads us into is to feel the full spectrum, from great exaltation and joy, to the pain of mourning and dying and suffering. It’s called the Paschal Mystery. The totally free person is one who can feel all of it and not be afraid of any of it."
- Richard Rohr - from Days of Renewal
I was really struck by one thing in this message - that suffering is necessary so that we can know evil and confront it. It leads me to think that unless we suffer in some way, we will not really be aware of suffering in the world and will not feel passionately about justice or bringing about justice. It is very true that we people feel feebly in comparison to God's great fierce feeling and passion. Maybe that is why we continue to idly stand by while we are continually faced with injustice - we have lost our capacity to feel it. However, we cannot stop there - we need to feel not only pain and suffering and injustice, but we must also open ourselves up to fully embrace joy and peace and love and allow it to overflow to those around us. The challenge is to feel and hold both in tension, losing sight of neither and yet obsessing about neither. This is my prayer.
Side note: I don't have regular access to the internet this summer, so blogging might be sadly intermittent.

Volkswagens GALORE
Here is a sweet van I saw yesterday. I especially like the funny stripes on the side and the color. I am not sure what the vent is up at the front. I wanted to go look inside, but I wasn't that bold. It has curtains, so I am thinking that it has a great camping interior. You can always dream, right?
Front view. Nice, huh?
Not technically a van, but I am putting it on here because it's related to a van and had really cool art all over it. On top, it has a vibrant Zia sun symbol. On the front are some wierd hot air balloons, and on the side is a very well-done New Mexico landscape, that I couldn't photograph because of the red Beetle blocking my view. Grrrrr. Also one of the workers at the repair shop was giving me wierd looks for walking around with a camera. The bright blue bumper really finishes off this look. Let's give it up for all the crafty hippies in this state.

Shawl in action
The wedding shawl came in very handy last weekend when the evening turned slightly chilly and the bride was wearing a sleeveless wedding dress. It was big enough, which was what I was really worried about, and it looked pretty good.

All my flights to and from the wedding provided ample and blissfully uninterrupted sock-knitting time, as well as many interested questions and admiring feelings of the socks by the sock's fellow passengers. I finally turned the heel and finished the gusset on sock no. 2. We are on the home stretch! YAY!!!
